Municipalities Play a Vital Tourism Role

Visitors judge a community by more than its shops and restaurants. Sidewalks, parks, beaches, trailheads, public restrooms, town halls and municipal websites are all part of the trip. When those places are accessible, people with disabilities, older visitors and families with strollers can enjoy everything a town or village has to offer, and they stay longer and spend more in the local economy.

Towns and villages also have legal obligations under Title II of the Americans with Disabilities Act. The U.S. Department of Justice now requires state and local government websites, online services and mobile apps to meet WCAG 2.1 Level AA. Municipalities with fewer than 50,000 residents, which includes nearly every community in the Adirondack region, must comply by April 26, 2028. Municipalities with 50,000 or more residents must comply by April 26, 2027.

What We Do

ADA Self-Evaluations

We assess parks, trails, beaches, buildings and other public spaces against ADA standards and provide a written report with photos and findings. Our assessment of all 12 parks in the Village of Saranac Lake is one example.

Website Accessibility

We test municipal websites, online forms and documents against WCAG 2.1 Level AA and explain what needs to be fixed before the federal Title II deadline.

Education and Training

We meet with boards, staff and committees to explain what the ADA requires for public facilities, websites, documents and social media.

Listing and Promotion

Accessible parks, beaches, trails and public facilities can be listed on our website at no cost so visitors with disabilities can find them.

With Your Help, We're Making The Adirondacks More
Accessible for Everyone

Accessible Adirondack Tourism, Inc. is a 501(c)(3) charitable organization that is authorized to accept donations that are tax deductable to our donors.

We're not just a website. We're also an online and in person educational resource for businesses, organizations and municipalities within the Adirondack region to assist them in their goals of being more accessible to people with all kinds of disabilities.

We offer organizations assistance with learning about how to make their locations, websites and social media pages available to everyone and we need your generous support to continue our mission.
